Capitalism: A Personal View

  Tuesday, July 22, 2008
The purpose of this blog is to give me the opportunity to express some deeply held views.  These views come from my personal experience and involvement in our great system of capitalism.  I started my first business in 1983.  I have been a business owner for all but three of the years since then.  Those three years were spent in a job with a fairly large corporation.  It was a time that convinced me I was meant to be self employed.
I opened my most recent business in December 2001.  I placed my life savings at risk and sentenced myself to years of hard labor.  For the first two years I received very little return on my investment of time and money and worked seven days a week.  However, I can now say the sacrifices paid dividends.
Capitalism is the foundation of our economy in this country.   I believe it is the very soul of what makes us different and successful as a people.  Small companies like mine and large companies like WalMart and Microsoft all had their beginnings with someone taking advantage of opportunities available through capitalism.
Government involvement in capitalism should be like that of a referee or umpire in a game.  Let the players play the game.  The referee is there to keep it fair.   The more it becomes about the referee, the more corrupted the game becomes. The referees need to be paid, but not "paid off."
Like it or not, capitalism is the basis for our economy and therefore involves every part of our society.  I want to discuss and rant about how capitalism affects us as a people and how government affects capitalism.
